Nearly four billion people still lack access to a reliable, sustainable source of electricity — that’s almost half the world’s population.

But momentum is building to change that. Initiatives like the Global Energy Alliance, a multi-billion-dollar effort supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, the IKEA Foundation, and the Bezos Earth Fund, are accelerating progress toward universal energy access.

Our latest podcast episode welcomes Ashvin Dayal, Senior Vice President for Power and Climate at the Rockefeller Foundation, who shares insights on bringing electricity to underserved communities and achieving economic and energy resilience.

“The trend is definitely towards what we call interconnected mini-grids. Distributed energy resources are the way of the future, even in modern electric grids in the US and in Europe.”

By combining technology and partnerships across governments, businesses, and communities, these efforts are helping unlock economic opportunities and expand access to electricity in emerging countries like India and Nigeria.

“Within five years, if you can have hundreds of utilities with this capability, we’ll be at the next level of trying to get to that ultimate goal of universal energy abundance.”

In this conversation with Cody, we discuss the benefits of philanthropic capital as a way to de-risk investment, scale innovative energy solutions, and support countries as they navigate the transition toward a cleaner and more inclusive electrical system
