I’ve gone through several iterations over the course of my writing career spanning the last 3.5 years. When I first started, I was writing every Thursday. Then, the weeks got busier so I transitioned to panic writing on Saturday mornings. I would wake up at 4 or 5 AM, write until my kids woke up and then hit publish on whatever I’d gotten out. That worked pretty well for a while. But it’s not anymore.

The biggest obstacle in writing every week hasn’t been having something to say. There’s dozens of pieces I want to write and many of which I’ve sketched out the outlines for. The obstacle is finding the time to say it well.

First, Contrary Research continues to ebb and flow in terms of how much time it takes up, but often it takes my Saturday mornings to get it out. Second, I’ve been enjoying a new tradition with my boys on Saturday morning where we’re watching cartoons and Marvel movies together. Unfortunately for my writing habit, my boys have also enjoyed that new tradition, which means they’ve managed to figure out how to wake up even earlier on Saturday morning to get started.

That + a week of travel, lack of sleep, and a particularly hairy research newsletter to get out, I’m sitting on a piece I desperately want to write. But I don’t have the mental energy or time to do it justice. So, once again, it will have to wait another week.

In the past there have been a few weeks here and there where I needed to get out and touch some grass, have some time to recharge. I need that again this week as I (1) recover from my week, (2) engage with the obstacle I’m facing to my writing habit, and (3) prepare for another atrocious week of a LOT of travel and limited options for sleep.

So that’s what I’ll do. But in the interim I’ll share a piece that I always refer to as my favorite piece I’ve ever written. Enjoy!
